Statement of Aims

Statement of Aims

For my coursework I will be focusing on television marketing. It will be based on an original tv show that I created called Double Dynamics produced by BBC 1.

I will be producing a short clip from episode 1 of my tv show: Double Dynamics. When shooting my short clip, I will be including different locations so that I can show my storyline and how it progresses. I will also have a variety of different lighting to represent the mood of the scene, for example when my main characters (Ocean & Celine) are having an argument in the recording studio, there will be dark blue lighting to portray the serious mood. My short clip will also involve a wide range of camera angles and shots which can be used to create meaning for example, a close up shot of Ocean's face when she is crying will highlight and put focus on her emotions and a high angle shot will show that she is feeling vulnerable and weak. There will be mise-en-scene that can help the audience easily identify what type of tv show Double Dynamics is. My main characters will act and dress in a way that will attract the target audience ( 18-34 year old's). My short clip will show the key moments of the storyline that is needed for the tv show to progress for example, the fight between Ocean and Celine that causes them to break their group and go their separate ways. I will have characters that represent different social groups, such as age, gender, race. There will be diegetic sounds such a music and singing as this is a musically based tv show. There will also be non-diegetic sounds such as sad instrumentals over scenes that are emotional, which will add the mood of the scene. The editing will consist of sharp and smooth cuts for example, there will be a sharp cut from the chaotic scene of fighting, loud noises and dark lighting to a calm scene where it is quiet and bright.

The name of the magazine that I will be making is 'Award'. I chose Award because it is distantly related to the television industry. An award is what is given to the tv show to show them acknowledgement for their work and achievements so this is something that tv shows strive for. My magazine will be aimed at 18-34 year old's and to make this clear I will be using more mature language. The strap-line will be "No.1 Bestseller TV Magazine". This will show that Award is a very good and popular magazine that will prompt people into buying it. It will also show that it is better than its competitors. Award will be in a fancy font and different from the cover lines so that it stands out more on the page. The cover lines will be linked towards the theme of my magazine. I will have one cover line to introduce my tv show production interview, another one to address the audience, another one talking about other tv shows/movies and another talking about actual film awards. The magazine will cost £1.99, an appropriate price considering my target audience (18-34 year old's). The main image/cover model will be a long shot of one of the main characters in my tv show, Ocean (Arianna Richards) - the person getting interviewed in the double page spread. She will be in front of the title of the magazine to show that she is more important and is the main point of interest. The primary representation on my front cover will be a black female in her 30s. This will therefore interest people from those representative groups. There will also be an advertisement of a camera, which links to the television industry. The color scheme of the front cover will be white writing on a dark (almost black/grey) background. This will show that this is a magazine of high quality.

I will also be producing a double page spread for my tv show. The title of my article will be "Double Dynamics" because that is the name of the show. The article will be an interview with Arianna and include an introduction of what the tv show is about and behind the scene stories. The article will also include information of when the tv show is going to air (day & time). I will structure the interview in columns, with the questions as subheadings and have the headline (name of the interview) stand out at the top of the page. I will also have pictures of Arianna in the article. I will also have Double Dynamics' social media in the article and the magazines social media at the bottom of the page.

Exam Paper 1 Section B

EXAM PAPER 1 SECTION B

PAPER 1 Section B   45 marks ( 45 minutes writing time )

3a)  What is a media conglomerate?

A media conglomerate is a company that owns numerous other companies involved in the media industry such as television, radio, publishing, etc. An example of a media conglomerate would be Disney.

3b)  How does ownership shape the content of newspapers? Refer to the Mirror and The Times.

Ownership can be a deciding factor for the type of content that a newspaper prints as they have a huge influence on the editorial stance of the newspaper. For example, The Daily Mirror is owned by Reach plc. Reach plc is a left-wing and it shows through the news the print in their different newspapers (such as Daily Express, Sunday People, Daily Star, etc). The Daily Mirror's political alignment is Labour and so their marketed audience is over 35 year olds and working class labour supporters.

3c)  What has been the impact of recent technologies on all elements of  the newspaper industry   and how has it responded to these challenges? Refer to The Mirror and The Times.

As times are evolving, technology becomes a bigger part of people's everyday life. Newspapers have adapted to this and have released an online version of their newspapers that people can read. For example The Times has an online version of their newspaper that people can subscribe to so that they can get the lastest news, updated in real-time.

4a)  What is the importance of  fandom in media products? Refer to the Assassins Creed franchise to support your points.

Fandom is important in media products because depending on the outcome of the product, there could be more developments of the product. For example, Assassins Creed was first released in 2007 and has featured 11 main games in total, the most recent being 2018 Assassins Creed Odyssey. The game was first released on Playstation Vita in 2012 and since then has been released on 5 other platforms. This is due to the popularity of the game and the fandom that wanted more of the game and bought new features.

4b)  How is the gaming industry regulated or what are the challenges in this particular industry?

The Games Rating Authority (GRA) rates games using the PEGI system. Games that have a PEGI 12, 16 or 18 can not be sold to anyone under the age limit. They also have symbols to show what the game may involve such as bad language, violence or drugs. The ratings are there to ensure that people (mainly children) are playing age appropriate games. However some challenges of this is that some parents do not buy their children age appropriate games. This is because they believe that the game content should be suitable for children.

5) How important is historical context to media products? Refer to your Tide advertising case study.

Historical context is important to media products. An example would be the Tide advert. During the 1950s, the media focused on a woman's role in the home. This was the era of the 'happy homemaker' where young mothers were encouraged to stay at home. The media gives us ideas that we use to construct our identity. In the Tide advert, the women are represented as the role model of the perfect woman and that may be what the audience uses to identify themselves with.

Section B: Newspaper

Daily Mirror & The Times

A tabloid is the popular newspaper that is image led and and has short stories that use simple language. They usually have red mastheads meaning that they report on politics and International news but tend to also include news on celebrity gossip and scandals. Examples of popular tabloids would be Mirror, The Sun or Daily Mail.

A broadsheet is a quality newspaper that is text led and has longer sentences and paragraphs than a tabloid. They write more in-depth articles. Broadsheets have a wider news range than newspapers with red mastheads and cost more to buy and aren't popular these days. Examples of popular broadsheets would be The Times, The Guardian or The Daily Telegraph.

The Daily Mirror

Daily Mirror is a tabloid. It was founded in 1903 by Alfred Harmsworth as a newspaper for and run by women. It is owned by parent company Reach plc. The CEO of Reach plc is Jim Mullen. Reach plc owns many different newspapers such as The Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Sunday People, Daily Record, Daily Star, OK! People can access Daily Mirror by going onto their website, by buying a print copy or seeing some articles on their social media networks. Looking at some of the newspapers that Reach plc owns, they seem like a left-wing. For example The Mirror's political alignment is Labour. The marketed audience for the Daily Mirror is over 35 year olds and working class Labour supporters.

The Times

The Times is a broadsheet. It was founded in 1785 by John Walter. It is owned by News UK.

Paper 1 Section B - Film Marketing

PAPER 1 Section B exam questions

 a) What is meant by a mainstream film? [2]

A mainstream film is usually a film with a big budget, produced by a well-known company such as Disney or Fox. It is produced for a mainstream audience and usually does will in box office. Films such as Black Panther and Avengers are examples of mainstream films.

 b) Briefly explain what a media conglomerate is. [2]

A media conglomerate is a company that owns numerous other companies involved in mass media enterprises. An example of a media conglomerate is Disney.

 c) Explain two features of independent film production. Refer briefly to I, Daniel Blake to support your points. [6]

Independent films are usually produced by independent companies that are on a low budget. They cast unknown actors/actresses because they don't have enough budget to afford a popular actor/actress. For example, I, Daniel Blake casted unknown actors/actresses. Independent films are usually funded by different companies because they need that investment for their film. For example, I, Daniel Blake was funded by numerous different companies such as BFI and BBC Films. Independent films are usually made to make the audience think about a certain topic or issue. They are made to be more realistic compared to mainstream 'studio' films. For example, I, Daniel Blake touches subjects such as life on benefits and the way poor people are neglected by the government.

d) Explain how economic contexts shape mainstream films. Refer to Black Panther to support your points. [15]

Mainstream films can be identified by their economic factors such as production company, distribution or their budget. For example, Black Panther can be identified as a mainstream film because it was produced by Disney, one of the 5 major studios and one of the big 3 media conglomerates. Black Panther had a budget of $200 million and a box office of $1.344 billion (as of May 2018). Due to the success of Black Panther as part of the Marvel franchise and the high profit number, Disney is releasing a sequel said to be released in July 2022.

Mainstream films have a big budget to work with and this helps them hire their cast. Most mainstream films have popular actors/actresses and this is good for the film as it brings the actors/actresses fandom to the audience. For example, Black Panther cast popular actors/actresses such as Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, etc. This helps the success of Black Panther as not only Marvel fans are watching it but also fans of the actors/actresses.

Mainstream films are known to attract a wide range of people. For example, Black Panther attracts the Marvel audience/fandom. They also attract people who are aware of The Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party (founded in 1966, Oakland, California) were people who were disappointed in the failure of the civil rights movement to improve the condition of blacks outside the south and decided to focus on improving and helping their communities. Black Panther can be seen as in support of the Black Panther Party. This also inspires everyone, including black youth, who deserve to see superheroes like them, to show them that truly anyone can be a superhero. Black Panther’s role signals a black renaissance.

Mainstream films are also known to have big marketing campaigns. For example, Black Panther released the teaser trailer in June 2017 and within 24 hours it has been viewed 89 million times on YouTube. Just before release, Black Panther was the most tweeted about film of 2018 with more than 5 million tweets globally. In mid-March 2018, it became the most tweeted about film ever with 35 million tweets. Black Panther also released the movie poster that contained many different enigma codes from the movie.

In conclusion, there are many different economic contexts that help shape a mainstream movie and Black Panther is a successful example of that.

Intro task:

How does Black Panther fit into the Marvel franchise and universe?

Black Panther is a based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 18th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What makes it different from other films in the Marvel cinematic universe? Consider  the narrative of the film, characters, critical response, range of audiences

The film is based around the black community. It highlighted the majesty of Africa due to the character being noble and the opposite of African stereotypes.

What  made it successful ? Consider the film itself, the star, the existing fanbase , the cultural contexts of its release e.g  BLM , oscars so white , the range of audiences.

The film is about that it means to be black in both America and Africa. The film goes head on with the issues affecting modern day black life. This relates a lot to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual, social and artistic explosion in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, spanning the 1920s. At the time it was known as New Negro Movement. The movement also included the new African-American cultural expressions across the urban areas in the Northeast and Midwest United States affected by the Great Migration of which Harlem was the largest. It lasted roughly from the 1910s through the mid-1930s. This period is considered as a golden age in African American culture.

The Black Panthers

The Black Panther Party was founded in 1966, Oakland, California. Huey Newton and Bobby Seale were disappointed in the failure of the civil rights movement to improve the condition of blacks outside the south. Kathleen Neal Cleaver, inspired by women of the civil rights movement, Cleaver joined other women as influential members of the Black Panther leadership. Local chapters of the Panthers, often lead by women, focused their attention on community "survival programs". For 20,000 children each day, they organised a free breakfast program and also a free food program for families and the elderly. They sponsored schools, legal aid offices, clothing distribution, local transportation and health clinics and sickle-cell testing centres ins reveal cities.

This links back to Black Panther because the name of the movie and main character is Black Panther. It inspires everyone including black youth, who deserve to see superheroes like them, to show them that truly anyone can be a superhero. Chadwick's role signals a black renaissance.

Afrofuturism

Afrofuturism is a cultultural aesthetic, philosophy of science and philosophy of history that explores the developing intersection of African diaspora culture with technology. It was coined by Mark Dery in 1993and explored in the late 1990s through conversations led by Alondra Nelson.

Black Panther

Oscarssowhite

OcscarsSoWhite is a hashtag used to call out the lack of diversity - especially people of colour but also women and the LGBTQ community - in nominations for the Academy Awards or Oscars. It has expanded as a call for greater inclusion of marginalised groups in all aspects of the film industry.

Radio Industry: Initial Research
BBC and Radio 4

Summarise the differences between broadcasting and podcasting  for the audience and how it may affect the content and structure of a programme.

Broadcasting
  • Have a set schedule that has to be stuck to
  • Try to appeal to a mass audience by creating content on a wide range of topics
  • This is live and cannot be edited
Podcasting
  • Audience can download and listen to podcasts whenever they want
  • Try to appeal to a niche audience by focusing on individual topics / Audience is more likely to stumble across the podcast as they were actively searching for a topic the podcast was covering
  • This is pre recorded and can be edited

Define and give an example of a commercial  and a public Service  radio broadcaster, explaining the key differences.

Commercial - This is the broadcasting of television programmes and radio programming by privately owned corporate media, as opposed to state ownership. Example of a commercial broadcaster is Fox.
Public Service - Broadcasting intended for public benefit rather than to serve purely commercial interests. Example of a public service broadcaster is the BBC.
The main difference between commercial and public service is that commercial is primarily based on the practice of airing radio advertisements and television advertisements for profit. This is in profit to public broadcasting, which receives government subsides and usually does not have paid advertising interrupting the show.

Explain the identity, mission  and purpose of the BBC based on its origins, history  and how it is funded .

The BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation. The BBC is funded by an annual television licence fee (£150.50) which is charged to all British households, companies and organisations using any type of equipment to receive or record live television broadcasts and iPlayer catch-up. BBC's mission/purpose is "to act in the public interest, serving all audiences through the provision of impartial, high-quality and distinctive output and services which inform, educate, and entertain".

How does the BBC broadcast or provide content nationally, locally and globally?
( give examples)

BBC broadcasts only British based shows.

Case Study: Assassins Creed 3: Liberation

TEXT
Genre: Action-Adventure
Avatar: Focuses on the life of African-French Assassin Aveline de Grandpre. There are three persons: the Assassin, the Lady and the Slave. There are differences between their navigational skills, strength, speed and blending options.
World: This was set in 18th century New Orleans (towards the end of the French and Indian War. The game takes place in open world and is presented in the third person perspective.
Goal: The goal of the game is to stop the Templars gaining control over 18th century New Orleans, which leads her to seeking out and eliminating the mysterious leader of the group in their operations.
Multiplayer: This consists of players tapping nodes on maps, using different characters to capture bases and collect supplies.

INDUSTRY
Ownership and Franchise

The publisher of Assassin's Creed 3 Liberation is Ubisoft. Ubisoft Entertainment SA is a French video game company headquartered in Montreuil. It has published several games such as Assassin's Creed, Rayman, Just Dance etc. As of March 2018, Ubisoft is the largest publicly traded game company in the Americas and Europe in terms of revenue and market capitalisation.
Assassin's Creed is an action-adventure stealth video game franchise created by Patrice Désilets, Jade Raymond and Corey May. It was developed and published by Ubisoft. It is inspired by the novel Almut written by Slovenian writer Vladmir Bartol. The first game was released in 2007 and has featured 11 main games in total, the most recent being 2018 Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

Production/Distribution/Format
Assassin's Creed was released on:
PlayStation Vita in October 2012
Liberation HD PlayStation 3 in January 2014
Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 in January 2014
Liberations Remastered PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in March 2019
The game was released in North America, Europe, Australasia and Japan.
The game is only available in psychical form which means you can't play online and have to buy the game.

Marketing and Advertising
How was game advertised ( trailers, posters, articles etc.) and what elements of the game/format were featured and focused upon and why?

Reception
There were mixed reviews for Assassin's Creed. Based on 71 reviews, the game scored 70/100. Shaun Mclnnis, a reviewer for GameSpot, gave the game a score of 6.5/10. He praised the protagonist as "...a woman born from the romance between a wealthy father and a slave mother, someone who has overcome her uncertain upbringing to find a new life in the Assassin Brotherhood". He also praised the setting and writing. However. one fault he found was that the game "squanders its most unique ideas...Liberation takes little advantage of its own narrative format" and that the plot is "largely aimless and hastily delivered".

Regulation
Summarise the role of the organisation responsible for regulating the game's content and giving it a relevant age rating.

The game received an 18 rating from PEGI due to violent content that is seen as gross as certain acts may be sen as horrific methods of killing.

Consider the impact of digitally convergent media platforms on global production, distribution and circulation:
It is significant that the Assassin’s Creed III:
Liberation hand held game could be linked to the full PS3 console version of the game (owning both versions would unlock additional game content). This use of convergence is relevant in terms of promotion/marketing and circulation.
The internet/Wi-Fi functionality of the PS Vita allows users opportunities to download additional content (DLC) such as weapons, characters and “skins” or outfits. It also affords users the chance to engage in multiplayer versions of the game. These features promote gamer engagement and identification with the game.
Convergence - The merging of multiple media forms into one platform - Assassin's Creed being available on different devices.

Production Analysis

Self-Reflection on SideKick TV Show Poster
My TV show was inspired by Fox show Star. Two girls who were best friends become enemies in the music industry and face a lot of drama and unexpected murder.
For my poster I tried to pick a font that would not overshadow the picture but match the genre. The colour of my font i.e. the title, the reviews are in black and white to contrast the background. The release date, the broadcaster, day and time its showing are in red so that it stands out on the poster. It brings the audiences attention to the important information.
I picked the main image from a range of pictures I had taken. I picked this picture because I felt that it portrayed the emotion and matched the storyline of the TV show.
I also used the black and white theme to show that there are two different sides to the story but although they are contrasting colours, they still go well together. This represents the relationship between my two main characters. I think my editing of the background (making it black and white) worked out really well because I then able to create a theme of the poster.
I think I would improve the quality of the work. I think there are aspects that could look better for example by editing the background, making black and white. There are some mistakes.

I, Daniel Blake Analysis

Independent Films - Films that are made with a lower budget than mainstream films. Independent films are sometimes identified by their content and style.

  • Marketing Strategies - Independent films have small marketing campaigns and are spread through word of mouth or critics/reviews.
  • Actors - The actors used in Independent films are usually unknown and are used because it is cheaper.
  • Set - Independent films are filmed in the same location with only a couple of shots located elsewhere as this is the cheapest option.

Production Information
  • Directed by Ken Loach - An English filmmaker who's socially critical directing style and socialist ideals are evident in his film treatment of social issues such as poverty (Poor Cow), homelessness (Cathy Come Home) and labour rights (The Navigators). He focuses on addressing political issues.
